Writing Workshops
The title of this section is somewhat misleading when taking into consideration the fact that most teachers consider a "workshop" to be an exercise for collaborative revising and editing. This section does not provide instruction for students on how to "workshop" or peer-review, but instead, each of the section's eight chapters exposes the student to a different genre or purpose for writing. The chapters are not broken down into lessons, but stand alone by themselves as a single lesson. The authors organize the chapters of this section in an order that is the least intimidating to the student by starting with the "Autobiographical Incident," or personal narrative, advancing into writing essays and finally the research paper.
The specific lessons included in "Writing Workshops" are:
18: The Autobiographical Incident
19: Focused Description
20: Literary Interpretation
21: Cause-and-Effect Essay
22: Persuasive Essay
23: Problem-Solution Essay
24: Poetry
25: Research Report.
We have focused on chapters 18 and 22 for our analysis.

Chapter Lessons' Layout
Each chapters in this section is a single lesson that guides the student in practicing writing in a particular genre. Each chapter consists of the following parts:
1. Learn What It Is
- Rubric
3. See How It's Done
6. Student Help Desk
The only one of these sections that varies much is the "Do It Yourself" section, particularly the prewriting and drafting. We have analyzed chapter 18 in its entirety, but thereafter have focused solely on the "Do It Yourself: Prewriting and Drafting" section for the other chapters we analyzed within "Writing Workshops."
