"The New Writing Pedagogy"
In "The New Writing Pedagogy" by Pascopella and Richardson, Pascopella and Richardson educate readers on the expanding incorporation of internet writing (social networking) and collaboration in the curriculum. As Pascopella and Richardson (2009) state in their writing, “85 percent of youths ages 11-17 engage at least occasionally in some form of electronic personal communication” (p.2). The use of internet and media in the classroom is beginning to increase rapidly with the development of social networking sites. Pascopella and Richardson(2009) discuss how “with the advent of Web-based social networking tools like blogs and wikis, YouTube and Facebook, it may be that the next revision of writing pedagogy is upon us, one that emphasizes digital spaces, multimedia texts, global audiences and linked conversations among passionate readers”(p.2). Since the use of social networking is increasing, so is the demand for it to be incorporated into the curriculum. One of the benefits of incorporating the use of writing through social networking sites into classroom instruction is that it creates a much wider audience for writers. Not only can the students’ classmates access their writing, but people from all over the world can access students’ writing as well. Students are then able to collaborate and socialize with various students from all over the world which will essentially better prepare students for future collaboration assignments due to the fact that, “learning and jobs of the very near future will increasingly require people to collaborate from a distance”(Pascopella & Richardson, 2009, p.3).
